How to Insert Footnotes in PowerPoint Quickly

Note : Watch this short tutorial screencast or follow the quick steps below, that complement this video.

1. Add a Footnote Annotation in PowerPoint

In a simple bulleted list let's add the PowerPoint footnote annotation that helps us attribute a fact. I'll type a number like 1 after the sentence, highlight it, and then click on the arrow just below the Font section of the menu.

Start adding a footnote in PowerPoint by creating the annotation.

Find this option that says Superscript, tick it, and then press OK. Using SuperScript text puts your PowerPoint footnote in the style that is commonly used for annotations.

2. Insert a Footnote in PowerPoint

Now below this I'll go ahead and add the PowerPoint footnote itself by inserting a new text box at the bottom.

Use a text box to insert a footnote in PowerPoint.

Let's go ahead and type the number 1 and then the source of the attribution, which is basically the note at the bottom that explains it.

3. Apply Superscript Font to a Footnote

Once you've added the PowerPoint footnote text, change the font to Superscript.

Then, let's highlight it and go back up and apply the same Superscript option to the text so that it's clear that this is the reference. Now the audience knows the source of the fact and can look up any details, especially if you send the PowerPoint slides after the fact.

Finishing Up!

You could add more annotations and more references at the bottom by just incrementing the number like 2 for the second annotation and 3 for the third, for example.
